CHAKRA ; Human Aura ; From A Scientific Perspective
We all have somewhat heard of the idea of “Chakra” or sort of spiritual energy, from movies, or anime like Naruto, or the Chi of San Goku from Dragon Ball. Well, it seems like there may be a lot more than just fiction to the magical chakra.
Brief Overview; Origin and Meaning
The chakra system, originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC in the oldest text called the Vedas.
However Chakra have always been around, mentioned in other Cultures and religious systems under different names. Chakra in Hinduism, Chi for the Buddhism culture, Acupuncture Meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Lataif in Sufism. Although there are some differences about the locations and number of Chakra, the main idea remains the same.
Chakras are the concentrated energy centers of the body. The word being derived from the Sanskrit term chakra meaning “wheel” or “disk”. They are spinning wheels of energy or light in the body with their centers at specific locations.
Each Chakra Center correspond to specific organs as well as physical, emotional, psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being.
Within these chakras is ‘prana,’ or the ultimate pure healing energy, that’s all around us and within us, to keep us healthy, happy and vibrant.
I am not going to go over in details about the 7 chakras due to my objective being the scientific explanation behind this phenomena. But in case you want to learn more, here is a quick video about it.
Chakra from a scientific perspective
First of all, We have to pay attention to something really amazing that most of us probably didn’t know.
“Our body is surrounded by an electromagnetic field of energy ; that extends all around our body for about 4-5 feet(in an average healthy body)”.
Yes, it sounds straight from movies, but we are indeed surrounded by an electro magnetic field which have be measured with an electrocardiogram (ECG) or electroencephalogram (EEG).
Often called the Human Bio-Magnetic field, Aura Electromagnetic Field, Auric Field, or the Aura of a person in ancient cultures. We shall see some brief point to understand this phenomena.
The adult body is comprised of more than 70 trillion individual cells.
Each of those trillions of cells carries out several thousand metabolic processes every second.
Complex electrical activity are produced in several different types of cells such as neurons, endocrine, and muscle cells.
Cells normally go through at least 7,000 chemical reactions per second.
All these continuous process each with their own electrical activity contributes to the magnetic field.
A healthy cell has a transmembrane potential of about 80 or 100 millivolts. A cancer cell, for comparison, has a transmembrane potential often as low as 20 or 25 millivolts.
The Human Aura is a really interesting phenomena, there is much more to it than just a magnetic field around the body.
For Instance, The interaction of magnetic fields between 2 persons who are in proximity. Describes how people can feel each other just by the magnetic field they emit. The results of The Electricity of Touch experiment : The data showed “when people touch or are in proximity, a transference of the electromagnetic energy produced by the heart occurs,” the study’s authors wrote.
Another interesting fact about the Auric Field is that it is emitted by all living things. Yes, even plants do have a magnetic field surrounding them. George Washington Crile's research shows that not only do plants communicate between themselves by means of electromagnetic signals, and that this can be demonstrated experimentally, but that they are also sensitive to non-plant life should it approach them.
The subject of Human Bio-Magnetic field or the Auric field, is really interesting, however we won’t go deep into the subject since we just want to demonstrate the vital force that permeates all living being, the Chakra as they call it.
Now let us see in brief the Nervous system which transmit signals (electric impulses) all around the body.
The Nervous system relay information by transmitting signals to and from different parts of its body. The nervous system is divided into two main parts, the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
The Central Nervous system consisting of Brain and Spinal Cord.
The Peripheral Nervous System consisting of Nerves and Ganglia outside the brain and spinal cord.
Now what are those Ganglia (Plural; Ganglions);
Well they are simply cluster of nerves carrying electrical impulse. Groups of nerve cells bundled together and branching outward (toward the body organs) or inward (to the brain). Those nerves converges at certain location in the body called “plexus”.
According to Western healing, those Ganglion Plexus of the Peripheral nervous system is what the Eastern healing consider to be chakra point of the body.
If you compare the chakra wheels in hinduism, or the Chi Meridian of the Traditional Chinese medicine and Taoist, one will see that they coincide to those Nerve Ganglions of the Body. They overlap both anatomically and functionally with major nerve plexuses in the body.
These concentrations of nerve bodies, or ganglia, support major physiological functions from breathing to heart rate to digestion, elimination and sex. Similar to the function of the Chakras ; to draw in energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance.
The body definitely have a vital force that circulates all around the body. The Vital Force ; Élan Vital ; Prana ; Energy, it goes under different names among different cultures, but have always been recognized. And these vital force have centres in the body whether you view it from the ancient traditional Chakra point of view, or the Western Nerve Ganglionic plexus Centers.
Thus, the concept behind stimulating these nerve centers in order to get a certain result is not pure myth and science-fiction but does have some truth to it. And Traditional Chinese Medicine using acupuncture and ReiKi along the Chi Meridians already demonstrated the effectiveness of these methods stimulating the body energy centers.
We shall see in our next article how to naturally stimulate those energy centers and the effects.
